How to Fuel the Power of Connection During Teacher Appreciation Week

Every child deserves a champion—an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.

-Rita F. Pierson, Ed.D, Speaker, TED Talks Education

This quote appears at the signature of my emails. It reflects my belief in what every student deserves. It reflects my belief in what great teachers do. I’ve been blessed to experience this power and connection with many teachers in my own life, as I’m sure many of you have. At Groves Academy, our teachers understand the power of connection. It ignites our mission which drives what we do in our classrooms—build confidence, success, and purpose through transformative learning experiences.

Teacher Appreciation Week this year is May 2 through 6.

Parents and students are encouraged to show how much they appreciate teachers through yummy treats, plaques with inspirational quotes, and gift cards, which are all great ways to express gratitude.

However, this year, I’d also like to challenge us to go a little deeper by reflecting on the power of connection and inspiring teachers to be the best they can be. Writing a personal thank you note that shares what you’ve witnessed/experienced with a teacher does this significantly. It demonstrates the co-creative nature of the relationship between the student, teacher, and parent.

What should you write about?

  • Authentic moments worth celebrating and important lessons learned
  • Collaborative experiences between school and home that demonstrate compassion for all
  • Opportunities for discovery and tenacity in moments where the journey was challenging, but support never wavered

Heartfelt words have the ability to ignite a powerful spark. Write a personal note to fuel a teacher during Teacher Appreciation Week and for years to come.
