MACBETH, full title The Tragedy of Macbeth, is a sorry tale. It documents the damaging physical and psychological effects of powerful political ambition. A Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from three witches that he will become King of Scotland one day. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders the sitting king and takes the throne for himself. He becomes tormented by guilt and paranoia, which force him to commit more and more horrific crimes. Eventually, the subsequent strife and eventual civil war sink Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into madness and death.
