In-person event at Groves Learning Organization
Have you ever found yourself arguing with your teen, going around and around on issues such as curfews, friends, substance use, or homework? Does it ever feel like they don’t hear anything you say, and it’s like you’re talking to a brick wall? Do you ever wonder if there’s a better way to get through to them? Do you ever wonder if you’re missing something about how to help your child make good choices and be safe and healthy?
This session will focus on how to help your teen develop critical thinking skills about personal choices by borrowing from the highly effective Motivational Interviewing skills counselors use. You will learn about why lecturing doesn’t work and what to do instead–how to ask the next good question, how to listen actively and reflectively, and how to help your adolescent explore and commit to their values. If you’re ready to stop lecturing, arguing, and power struggles and instead listen to and empower your teen to make values-based decisions, this session is for you. It will be hands-on and engaging, so come ready to practice skills and engage in role-play.
This event is free and open to the public.
